DETERMINED PUPILS BATTLE ON WHEN BIG BIKE BUCKLES

Big Bike Buckles!

Pupils from Castle High School, Dudley showed great drive and dedication on Friday (10th October) when their efforts to raise money for Feed the Children UK were seemingly thwarted. Their sponsored big bike ride, on one of the world's largest bikes, hit a big problem when the bike developed mechanical failure that could not be repaired on the day. Faced with the prospect of not raising their sponsorship money for the charity, the pupils and their teacher escorts set to and walked instead!

Regional fundraising manager for Feed The Children, Joy Cartwright said, “The students from Castle High all decided that they wanted to continue on with their event so they could make sure that the charity was able to raise some funds for the day. So they picked up their buckets and decided to walk almost 5 miles to join up with one of the other schools due to take part in the event.”

Five teams from three Dudley senior schools were due to take part. The other two schools were The Crestwood Ambassadors and The Kingswinford School. The bike ride was planned to operate in a relay but the buckled wheel put paid to the event after the first leg.

“The charity thanks all the drivers in the towns of Kingswinford & Brierley Hill who were so kind and patient whilst the students and teachers were en route, said Joy, “It was great to hear them singing as they walked. There was a lot of good natured support from pedestrians and drivers (thanks for honking your car horns in support),” adds Joy. “Although it was such a disappointment that we weren’t able to complete the whole ride, the students did us proud. As we all know, occasionally things happen which are beyond our control and this is one of those instances.”

The ride will hopefully be re-scheduled at a later date.
