Sri Lanka

On Boxing Day, 2004, the Asian tsunami devastated
large areas of Indonesia, Thailand and Sri Lanka.
Feed The Children quickly launched an emergency
appeal, and very soon, our warehouses were full to overflowing with
essential food, clothing, blankets and toiletries.
Working with the Round Table of Sri Lanka, Feed The
Children supported villages to the north of the island, were
hitherto, aid had not reached; the north was thought to be in less
urgent need than the south.
Our aid was twofold; firstly, we delivered goods for
the immediate relief of those left homeless, including the children
living in the tent village at Saliankulame, above.
Secondly, the tsunami had left many thousands of
orphaned children, and the policy of the Sri Lankan government is
that children are best cared for in families, not in institutions.
Extended families, who were often poor to start with, needed support
in caring for their extra children.
Feed The Children provided grants of money,
administered by the Round Table, to help the families who have taken
in the orphans of the tsunami. |
